NON TOXIC HOME: Natural Laundry Detergent
You may have heard the claims for things like laundry detergent and dryer sheets being linked to carcinogens and other pollutants within your home. (Example article here.) Yikes, right?! While there is some dispute on these details, one thing is for sure, FRAGRANCE - whether in your detergent, dryer sheets, shampoo, lotion, etc. - is not a good idea. Even Snopes can agree on that.
Fragrance is that dirty little word that can conceal a variety of chemicals in a product and we as the consumer have zero right to know those details. Not sure about you, but that makes me really uncomfortable. (If you haven't already, watch Stink! on Netflix for why this fragrance ingredient is so concerning.)
As I've discovered more over the past couple years, our family has made an effort to limit the amount of items with that sneaky little word on the bottle. We've swapped out lotions, shampoos, hair de-tanglers, perfumes/colognes, soaps, sunscreens and more. It's been a slow "ditch and switch" process that has left me confident in what I'm using on and around my kiddos as well as myself.
One of our big changes was moving to a more natural laundry detergent which, in all honesty, wasn't easy. My hubby was a big fan of the typical laundry smells so we had to make it work for us. Now that we've found the combination that we all like, I figured I would share it with you!
Note: We fully trust Young Living for a large number of the products we use in our home with the biggest reason being they are extremely transparent with their products. I can go to any of their essential oil farms, watch the distillation process, ask questions and get answers. That's not something many other companies will allow.
There are other natural detergents out there, but I have the most confidence in Young Living and therefore chose to use Thieves Laundry Detergent for our family. Thieves Laundry Detergent is concentrated so we actually get two bottles out of one! (Some can even create three bottles out of one, but this is the method that has worked best for our family and dirty kid clothes.) Here's how we begin splitting the bottle:
Pour half of the new bottle of detergent into the other container
Add 2 capfuls of the Thieves Household Cleaner to each bottle of detergent
Fill the remainder of the bottles with warm, filtered water
Put on the lids and flip the bottles upside down to allow the water and detergent to mix. Gently flip back and forth
Yep, crazy simple. The Thieves Household Cleaner gives the detergent and extra boost of cleaning power which is great since we have young children that spill all the things.
Now that covers the cleaning power, but we also needed the scent to be good enough to replace the old junk so we made a simple scent booster.
1.5 cups Epsom salt (fragrance free)
.5 cup baking soda
20-30 drops of Young Living essential oils
Mix everything in a glass bowl (or just in the mason jar and shake)
Let it air dry for 5-10 minutes
Add 2-3 tbsp to each wash cycle
Boom! Great smelling laundry!
I let the family get in on selecting our scents and we ended up with a Grapefruit + Peace & Calming combo that we love.
Need an extra boost of scent? Add a couple drops of the oils on your wool dryer balls too.
This simple change is just another reminder that there is only so much I can control regarding the health of my family. I can't keep them safe from everything, but I am the gate keeper to our home and I will take whatever small steps I can to keep us on the right side of the wellness line.
Ready to rid your home of some fragrance filled junk? Tossing those scented candles and replacing them with a diffuser and essential oils is a great first step and the Young Living Premium Starter Kit (oils or Thieves) is the perfect place to begin.
Don't know enough about essential oils? No worries, friend! I'll guide you along the way and you'll gain an amazing community too!
Because homes should be beautiful and safe.
