Surprise Nursery: Design Concept + Sneak Peeks

Updated: Apr 30

What happens when a designer finds a small business she wants to support, falls in love with a print perfect for a nursery, but doesn't have a nursery to design? She finds a nursery, of course! I put a call out for someone interested in getting a free styled nursery and thankfully, I not only had people interested, but ultimately found someone willing to let me do as I wished without any heads up on the design plan needed. Umm, yes, please! Here's a look at the space before:

So unless the homeowner decides to read this, she has no idea what I'm working on in her space. So fun, right!? Since they do not know the sex of the baby, a gender neutral design was really the only parameter. Luckily, the starting point for this design was a print from Joymark Studio that is perfectly gender neutral.

From there I knew I wanted to add in at least one additional Lovely Maker so I pulled a few prints from Emma Leigh Designs. (Go meet her in my Meet the Makers post!) Her sweet prints coordinate beautifully with Stephanie's and with that I was well on my way to a full design plan.

The next step was to find a "wow" moment. I knew the prints I selected would work perfectly in a nursery design, but they aren't large pieces and I needed something to really fill the room without having to paint. Enter another unexpected small (woman-owned!) creative business: Cover These Walls.

Cover These Walls, based out of Canada, is a team effort from Amanda and Megan and let me tell you, they were a dream to work with! I was on a time crunch and they were oh so accommodating and their product is spectacular. I'm fairly confident I did it all wrong (maybe I should read directions?) and I still didn't screw it up.

For my main feature in the room, I selected the Sky Arch Rainbow 4' Wall Decal in Tan and guys, it is sooooooo good! I'll give you a peak at the end of this post, but to see it in all it's final glory, be sure you're subscribed to the Lovely Makers email because I'll be sending out the final room reveal on 4/20.

So after those few selected pieces, I planned out the rest of my color scheme and needed elements. Now, truth be told, I did this all in my head because I don't necessarily need the extra visual, but since I love you guys, I created a quick concept board that represents all the things swimming around in my brain. Of course, not every element is represented here that will be shown in the final design and the homeowner already had a crib and rocker. Ok, with all that in mind, here's a look at the design concept:

I'm excited to also be adding in a couple vintage/secondhand finds thanks to another creative small business, Brass Birdie. First, I'm obsessed with their name and second, they do the hunting for you which is kinda amazing, right? You'll have to wait until the reveal on 4/20 to see what I snagged, but I highly recommend giving them a follow and seeing what gorgeous finds you can bring home to your spaces.

OK, I know what you all really want so let's get to a couple sneak peeks, shall we?
